What is Fire Ecology?

Fire Ecology is the scientific process concerned with natural processes including, a fire in an ecosystem and its effects, the communications b/w fire and the components of an ecosystem,  and the role of its procedure.

Fire evolved as an essential contributor to habitat importance and renewal in many ecosystems. They mainly include Savanna and the Prairies.

What is Fire Ecology?

Many fire-affected plant species require fire to reproduce and other natural processes. The destructive wildfire suppressions destroy these plant species and the dependent animals.

Fire Reign

It refers to the alternative pattern of fire over a long period in specific ecology. It is a function of fire occurrence and its intensity.

The intensity of the fire is related to the resources available to it and even the spot's climatic conditions.

Mainly they are influenced by wind, topography and its fire history. Hence, the above-discussed definition will work in most cases.

Types of Fire

Many scientists found that fire has an impact on the natural ecosystem. It's of 3 types-

  1. Ground Fire will burn through land that is rich in humus.
  2. Surface fires will burn over dead decaying materials lying on the ground.
  3. Crown fires explain themselves only, will burn only at the top of materials such as trees and shrubs.
Types of Fire

It occurs in the dry season when the light rays are prevalent. Its frequency is a measure of common wildfires in a particular ecosystem.

Ecosystem Adaptability

According to the latest researches, there are three major plant species present in the fire ecology. Namely:

  1. Fire Intolerance- They are the species that are on the verge to be destroyed by fire.
  2. Fire Tolerance- They are the species having a specific point to withstand the fire and continue to grow despite the higher temperature.`
  3. Fire Resistance- This is a more exciting one, this type of species have little effect of fire upon it due to its fire resisting property. I know that you are learned persons, so you need an example. Pinus Ponderosa is an example of a tree that experience no crown damage in a Mild Fire environment.

Fire and Ecological Sequence?

Fire behaves differently in different ecosystems. The environment adapts itself automatically. Like in Minecraft we have different biomes, it also behaves similarly. I hope you like this example.

Ecological Sequences is a freshly burned site that will progress through a continuous and directional phase of colonization followed by the destruction caused by fire.

Fire and Ecological Sequence?

The scientists discovered that succession is characterized by changes in the environment and vegetation. The soil condition is a common factor in determining the fire-adapted ecosystem.

4 Behaviours of Fire

Now we will see that fire includes many things. Mainly it has four behaviours:

  1. Rate of burning (How fast fire spreads in a particular region)
  2. The intensity of fire (How hot it burns)
  3. Revolving of fire
  4. Ember Production

Stages of Fire

In the term fire ecology, fire has three different stages that are the most common. They are:

  • Ignition- Oxgen flourish the fire in a sustained chemical reaction.
  • Growth- With the flourishing point, several fumes also ignite.
  • Fully Developed- Fire spreads as much as its resources are present. It's temperature reach its peak level and result into fire ecology.

Example of Fire Ecology

I know that you are a lucky fan, you won't satisfy without any example. So here you are.

  • Shrub-lands- Fire is commonly concentrated in the canopy and spread in a chain if the shrubs are not close enough.
Example of Fire Ecology
  • North-American Grasslands- The fire-adapted grasses (Bromus Tectorun) is found in ample quantity. Which is the reason for increased fire frequency.
  • Wetland Fire-I knows that it may sound suspicious. After many cycles, it is found that Fire ecology occurs majorly during the time of droughts.

Advantages of Fire Ecology

Inside the above points, fire ecology has some advantages too. Fire removes low growing underbrush, cleans the forest's debris, and even open it to the bright sunlight from quality growth.

Secondly, it also nourishes the soil. It also reduces some parts of the ecosystem that reduce the competition providing more strength to the others.

All in one, in terms of advantages, it is long used as a tool to fertilize soil and control plant growth.

My Views

And Finally, the most awaited part of the blog is My Views. Starting from the first. Fire ecology is simply the natural processes concerned with fire in a specific ecology. Examples are Savanna and the Prairies.

From the whole article, we also conclude that fire has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes fires destroy some properties of plant species required for reproduction and other natural acts. Sometimes it helps in various ways. Such as removing undergrowth, clean the unwanted substances, fertilize the soil and control extensive plant growth.

In my vision, Fire Reign is just the characteristic quality of fire which is dependent on the resources that are made available to it by the ecosystem itself.

Today also researches are going on fire ecology. To date, there are only three major types of fire. They are Ground fire, Surface fire and Crown fire which flourishes at different levels.

My Views

As we all know, every species evolve to adapt itself. Like humans are evolving for many years in search of a correct path. Similarly, in Fire Ecology, many plant species have evolved themselves to adapt to favourable conditions. Hence, it gave rise to 3 different species- Fire Intolerance, Fire Tolerance and Fire Resistance.

According to my, Everything is appropriate but in a particular boundary. If anything exceeds it, the result is disastrous. In this case, nature takes care of herself. Natural Fire Ecology is a better one than the artificial one.
